Multi-modality imaging of referred civilian combat-related injuries: a multi-center study in Egypt

Abstract Background Several Arab countries as well many parts of the world are currently involved in armed conflicts. Characterization and documentation combat-related injury patterns their impact on healthcare a difficult challenge. However, it is crucial planning developing strategies capable addressing demands ill-equipped medical facilities. The aim this study was to record different injuries sustained by civilians transferred Egyptian tertiary hospitals for further investigation definite treatment after primary stabilization an emergency trauma team countries. Results Metallic foreign bodies were detected body locations 49.1% patients, while bullets identified 12.3%. Injuries involving musculoskeletal system extremities most frequent (77.2%), followed descending order maxillofacial (41%), thoracic (32.1%), cranial (31%), abdominal (21.1%), spinal (8.8%), vascular (4.7%). Among injuries, bone fractures common (68.5%). Conclusion Radiological assessment aids evaluation patients coming from conflict zones pre- postoperatively, recognize precise sites types number location metallic shrapnel or bullets, detection possible associated complications, which aid accurate demonstration extent guide management plan.
